Eyeglass lenses would bring glare without additional treatment. Some people think it’s easy for lenses to block such kind of glare. Currently, one of the most common coatings is anti-reflection coating. This kind of coating is particularly created to fight against glare or reflection. But in fact, anti-reflection coating has different degrees of popularity in different countries. In the United States, only 15% of glasses sold have this coating. And in Europe, about half of eyeglasses are applied with anti-reflection coating. In Japan, anti-reflection coating is quite popular that approximately 95% of the glasses have it. It may be surprising that Japanese customers should pay extra if they do not want this coating.

Although anti-reflection coating is welcomed by different nations in different ways, it actually has many benefits. The first one is visual benefit. Anti-reflection coating applied to eyeglass lenses is quite similar to the one on microscopes and lenses of cameras. The most significant function of this coating is that it can improve one’s vision by reducing the amount of glare. Glare can be very annoying during many outdoor activities such as driving.

Driving is the activity that benefits most from anti-reflection coating. Night driving particularly requires good vision and prevention from glare. With the benefits from anti-reflection coating, driving can be safer. Moreover, other activities such as working and computer use can also benefit from this coating. Computer use can easily bring eyestrain, partially due to glare from the screen. Anti-reflection coating can effectively decrease computer glare, providing better vision for the vast majority of computer users.

Anti-reflection coating is applied in layers, each of which is calculated to block reflection light. This is the root of its special feature or function. But some people may not be aware that this special coating can also make the lenses look better. It is understandable that reflections and glare would cause the lenses look thicker. With the anti-reflection coating, eyeglass lenses appear clearer, offering more natural appearance of the eyes behind the lenses.
