Computer Glasses: Relieving Your Eye Fatigue

Posted by sean - October 14th, 2010

When you work at a computer for long periods, and not having a relaxation, it is very common to experience eye discomforts, such as dry eyes, eye strain, blurred vision and double vision. These symptoms are so-called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

In the beginning, you may think that you haven’t been accustomed to the new working environments. So you try your best to adjust yourself. But to your doubt, the discomforts can’t be lessened essentially. Why do we have the feelings?

The causes are various. Glare is the most important factor. Glare from overhead lights and screen has attributed to dry eyes. Poor contrast between lighting and computer screen also make eyes uncomfortable. Squinting, infrequent blinking, focusing on the screen for long periods of time and ultraviolet radiation from the screen are easy to result in dry eyes, too. Besides, high energy wavelengths produced by artificial light sources, such as fluorescent bulbs and computer screens, contribute to eye strain and fatigue. Prolonged, concentrated viewing of computer screens typically results in less blinking, which leads to dry eyes. Thus your eyes feel tired and can’t see the things clearly.

In regard to this situation, what can computer users do? For some starters, they may have a comprehensive eye exam to rule out vision problems and update their prescription eyeglasses in time. However, studies show that even smaller inaccuracies in your prescription lenses can contribute to bigger computer vision problems. If you don’t need prescription eyeglasses for most tasks and continue to experience eye discomfort, you can consider purchasing computer glasses.

Computer glasses are used for computer work which is different from the glasses they use for other common visual needs. In other cases, they may have a vision disorder that would not need a vision correction if they don’t perform a demanding visual job such as at the computer. Even people that have excellent vision may need glasses just for computer use.

Computer glasses differ from regular eyeglasses or reading glasses in a number of ways to optimize your eyesight when viewing your computer screen. Computer glasses put the optimum lens power for viewing your computer screen right where you need for a clear, wide field of view without the need for excessive focusing effort or unhealthful postures.

Computer glasses have single vision lenses with a modified lens power prescribed to give the most comfortable vision at the user’s computer screen. This lens power relaxes the amount of accommodation required to keep objects focusing on the distance of the computer screen and provides the largest field of view. Single vision computer glasses reduce the risk of eye strain, blurred vision and unnatural posture that can cause neck and back pain, and can be used comfortably by young and old computer users alike. Other lenses used for computer glasses include occupational bifocal, trifocal lenses occupational progressive lens, etc. Some research also reviews computer glasses can significantly increase workers’ productivity.

So you needn’t worry about your eye fatigue any more. Computer glasses will help you use computers in comfort.

Who are the Inventors of Contact Lenses

Posted by sean - April 27th, 2010

Many people think that contact lens is a relatively new invention invented in this century thanks to advanced technology and innovation. The truth is that people tried to develop contact lens many centuries ago, today’s contacts are mature ones based on the inspiration years ago.

The idea of contact lenses can date back to Leonardo Da Vinci. In the 16th century, Leonardo Da Vinci described the way of submerging the eye in a bowl of water, but he did not suggest his idea be used for correcting vision. Over 100 years later, Rene Descartes developed the idea of a glass tube filled with liquid that would correct visual problems, but it was impractical. Thomas Young developed Descartes’ idea 170 years later and produced what has been considered the predecessor to the contact lens. However, it would be in 1887 that a German glassblower developed a real sense of contact lens that could be seen through and tolerated. In 1888, the German physiologist Adolf Eugen Fick made glass contact lens and could be worn for a few hours at a time. After this, people realized the value of contact lenses, and the whole world requested for improved designs.

In the 1900s an American optometrist introduced the plastic “corneal” contact lens and produced a more practical contact lens. This meant a great step in the advancement of contact lens. People did not suffer pains from glass contacts from then on. The contact industry and technology became more and more mature. By the 1960s Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim created a soft contact lens of a water absorbing plastic. These lenses were soon used more often than rigid lenses, mainly due to the immediate comfort of soft lenses. This development is a principal breakthrough and inspires the majority of soft contacts today. In the 1970s this lens was available to patients in the United States and contact lenses provided to patients with astigmatism were also available.

The 1980s is an important landmark to the improvements of contact lenses. New options are more and more. The general public is able to wear soft colored contacts as well as extended wear lenses. Also, RGP lenses were invented; bifocal lenses could be found onto the market. And fortunately enough, for all lens wearers, the demand of multipurpose lens care solution was satisfied. The technology of contact lenses became mature gradually and in the 1990s there were more innovations and lens wearers could choose the one that suits him best from various options.

In short, there is not only one inventor of the contact lens, but rather cooperation among many people over many centuries. After centuries of experiment by those inventors, today’s contact lenses are pretty good in terms of technology and quality.
